Open Letter to Rage Against the Machine

Dear Rage Against the Machine,

Which “Machine” exactly were you raging against? Was it the Sony corporation – the parent company of Epic Records, the machine that produced and distributed your albums?

Was your rage directed toward the marketing geniuses responsible for convincing naïve white suburban teens that your anthems were the angst-filled voice of an anarchist counter-culture revolution?

Or maybe you were raging against that very same (primarily) white suburban fan base who made you rich & famous rock stars. Fans who bought your albums, and eventually grew up, graduated from accredited liberal arts universities and became complacent cogs in the capitalistic system that you attacked in your music? Fans sitting in their cubicles, toiling away at meaningless jobs – headphones on – bobbing their heads, and muttering, “Fuck you. I won’t do what you tell me.”
